THE SCHOOL
Centro Linguistico MAYA, an educational institution certified and
approved by the Guatemalan Government, was founded in 1979. We began with
three instructors. Today we have nearly 70 very qualified teachers. CLM
was created to provide work for the people in our community. This kind of
work represents a very important source of income in our country.
The school presently operates two, well-equipped buildings, which fulfills
our students needs.
The central building of CLM is located in downtown Antigua, two and
a half blocks away from the central park and one and one half blocks from
the bus station.
Since we are located downtown, our students have access to places like the
central market, the post office, a variety of restaurants, churches, hotels,
local craft shops and cultural monuments.
THE PROGRAM
Our program operates on a ONE-ON-ONE basis, every student has his
own teacher. The individual instruction of CLM makes you feel confident
that you are receiving the attention necessary to learn Spanish. Well-qualified
teachers work with our students according to their needs, with special consideration
given to personal interests. The program includes grammar, conversation
and exercises.
Our teachers are very experienced in this field All of them have completed
studies to teach Spanish. Generally, our teachers possess a minimum of five
years teaching experience, and many are completing other professional studies
at the University. Many of our teachers started with the school when it
was first founded.
When the student arrives, we evaluate their level of Spanish. Based on this
evaluation, the instructor plans an individualized teaching program. At
the student's request, the teacher makes periodic evaluations to determine
progress in the language. We provide our students with books and materials
suitable for individual levels of instruction.
Should an occasion arise when a student feels that a teacher is not fulfilling
their needs, they can request a change of teacher that we will immediately
honor. The Director is in daily contact with each student, and on Thursdays
the director spends time with each student to determine any special needs.
CLM also has excursions twice a week which feature different places
in and around Antigua, such as museums, colonial houses, and ruins of special
interest.
The most important idea of these excursions is to practice Spanish and to
learn about the architecture, culture, religion and customs of Guatemala,
and to get to know other students.
CLM can also arrange for weekend excursions with experienced travel
agents, which is the best way to travel in Guatemala.
