Learn Spanish and have a GREAT time doing it in beautiful
Antigua, Guatemala! At the Academia de Español Guatemala all of our
teaching is one-on-one in a splendid garden setting. Our fabulous teachers,
our focus on after-school activities, and our warm, family-like atmosphere
make us a school like no other. We offer homestays with a select group of
local Guatemalan families, and our focus on quality ensures our students
an experience to be cherished FOREVER!
THE SCHOOL
The Academia de Español Guatemala's College Accredited program,
which is endorsed by both the Ministerio de Educaci6n de Guatemala and the
Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo, offers Total Immersion Study. Even those
who have had no prior Spanish exposure will be completing basic Spanish
phrases after the first day! Classes are held Monday through Friday from
8:00-12:00 and 2:00-5:00, and students may start any day of the week.
Students and teachers work one-on-one,
which allows each student to work at his/her individual level. We place
particular emphasis on flexibility: students pick the areas they wish to
emphasize - conversation, comprehension, writing, etc. The school offers
a relaxed tranquil environment, with a choice of studying in either of our
two centrally located buildings - both colonial homes with bougainvillea-filled
gardens. Some students enjoy working in the park or strolling through town
with their professors. A few have even been known to study over a beer in
a local cantina! The student's schedule is entirely up to the student -
our teachers are here for you.
All of our teachers have a minimum of 10 years experience in teaching Spanish
as a second language, and unlike other schools, we provide them with yearly
contracts which enables us to maintain our superb teaching staff. Jose,
the housing coordinator, Victor, the activities coordinator, and Karla,
the English-speaking student coordinator each take a personal interest in
each student. Between them they can arrange anything from root canals to
beach vacations. The entire staff works together to make our school the
best it can be.
CREDITS
The school offers both College and Foreign Service Credits. The student
needs only to advise us beforehand and we will supply all the necessary
tests and paperwork. We also offer special programs for Flight Attendants,
Pilots, Nurses, Doctors, Business groups, and Cultural tours.
At the Academia de Español
Guatemala we have students of all ages from all parts of the world to provide
a truly cultural and educational experience. Our students, no matter their
age or nationality, always have a good time.
ACTIVITIES
The Academia de Español Guatemala offers a wide variety of daily
activities free of charge. These include volleyball, ping-pong, movie nights,
happy hours, bike trips, cultural excursions in our school van, "round
table" discussions, Latin dance classes, and, of course, many fiestas!
Students also have free use of our cable T.V. swimming pool and coffee,
tea annd purified water are available throughout the day.
For a minimul fee, optional weekend excursions enable students to further
explore this magical area and we can also arrange for students to participate
in a wide variety of local volunteer projects.
Students of AEG have full use of the school's telephone, email, fax, copier,
mail and check-cashing services as well as our Cable TV to catch up on important
news or not-to-be missed sporting events.
LIVING ARRANGEMENTS
During their course of study, students may choose to live with a Guatemalan
family in Antigua. All families are within walking distance of the school,
and each student has a private room. The families will provide three meals
a day as well as ample opportunities to practice your new language!
We can also provide a variety of recommendations ranging from luxury hotels
to modest pensions for students wishing to make their own living arrangements.
WHAT TO BRING
Dress in Guatemala is informal and rather conservative but... pretty much
anything goes. It is a good idea to bring along a warm sweater or jacket,
and comfortable shoes are a necessity. All of the houses will have an ample
supply of bottled water and bed linens, but it's best to bring your own
towel. In the summer you need to bring a small umbrella and to NEVER
leave home without it as daily downpours tend to sneak up on you.
The school supplies all of the books, tapes, videos and other studying material
you might need. You should bring a few pens and a spiral notebook, though,
and any reading material you might want because foreign reading material
is difficult to find in Antigua. Of course, after a few weeks in our school
you won't be needing this - you will be able to read everything in SPANISH!
We are looking forward to having you study with us and we PROMISE you
the experience of a lifetime!
